Diagnosis and Tests

To accurately diagnose ovarian cancer, a combination of methods, including but not limited to physical examination, imaging tests, blood tests, and sometimes surgical evaluations are done.

How is ovarian cancer diagnosed?

The diagnosis of ovarian cancer begins with the evaluation of the symptoms and risk factors. The healthcare provider performs a physical examination and recommends further tests based on the symptoms. To get an accurate diagnosis, the below-mentioned tests are conducted by a team of medical professionals.

Imaging tests

Imaging tests refer to the diagnostic methods that create an image of the internal organs to detect abnormalities. If ovarian cancer or any other benign tumor is present, the imaging tests also help to assess the shape, size, and exact location of the tumor.

Various imaging tests recommended by the doctor to diagnose ovarian cancer include the following:

  • Transvaginal Ultrasound (TVUS): A transvaginal ultrasound involves using a small probe which is inserted directly into the vagina to get a closer view of the ovaries and uterus. It can detect masses or cysts on the ovaries and helps to determine and differentiate between solid masses and simple fluid-filled cysts.
  • Pelvic and Abdominal Ultrasound: This test is done to examine the entire pelvic region and the abdomen. It involves using a transducer which is moved/rolled across the abdomen to create images of the internal organs. It helps to determine tumors spread across the fallopian tubes and other abdominal organs that a transvaginal ultrasound might have missed.
  • CT (Computed Tomography) Scan: A CT scan creates a cross-sectional image of the body to detect tumors in the ovaries and check if the cancer has spread to other organs. This test is very helpful in determining the size of the tumor and finding out if the cancer has invaded surrounding organs, such as the bladder, liver, intestines, etc.
  • MRI(Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Scan: An MRI scan uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create a high-quality image of the internal structures to differentiate between benign and malignant tumors. This test also helps to identify the stage or extent of the disease.
  • PET(Positron Emission Tomography) Scan: A PET scan is recommended for a patient when the doctor suspects that the cancer has metastasized significantly. It involves injecting a radioactive substance into the body which reacts with the cancer cells and shows up in the image created by a special camera.

Surgical Evaluation

In some cases, surgical evaluation is done for a definitive diagnosis of ovarian cancer and to determine its stage. This involves a biopsy that can be performed along with exploratory laparotomy or staging surgery.

Typically a biopsy involves taking a small sample of tissues from the tumor and its surrounding tissues. Then the sample is sent to the lab for examination under a microscope to determine the type of cancer and its stage. The biopsy samples taken during these procedures are sent to the laboratory for further evaluation to determine the stage of the cancer.

The combined results of the above-mentioned diagnostic tests guide the treatment decisions for ovarian cancer.
