Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Screening & Tests
Regular screening and self-exams are recommended for women of all age groups to ensure they are aware of the various changes that occur in the breast tissues throughout different phases of their life, including menstrual cycle, pregnancy, menopause, etc. Awareness improves the chances of an individual being more vigilant in noticing the changes and seeking treatment in the early stages, further improving the prognosis(chances of recovery).

How is breast cancer diagnosed?
Breast Cancer Biopsy
A biopsy involves taking out a small piece of tissue from the tumor and testing it in a lab to see if the sample contains cancer cells. There are various techniques available to perform a breast biopsy and the most appropriate technique is decided based on the size and location of the tumor.
Mostly, a needle biopsy is done guided by X-ray, ultrasound, or other imaging techniques. The biopsy results provide an accurate diagnosis of the type of breast cancer and also help to identify its growth rate.
Genetic Screening for Breast Cancer
This diagnostic test is performed to detect if an individual has inherited the breast cancer genes, i.e., BRCA1 and BRCA2, and identify if he/she is at a high risk of developing breast cancer.
For genetic testing, only a blood or saliva sample is taken and a thorough analysis is done. It is to be noted that usually, a multigene panel is used to look for several gene mutations at the same time.
Imaging Tests
A variety of screening and imaging tests are used for regular breast exams and detect if there is any abnormal growth in the breast.
Mammography
A mammography is the most common and standard screening test for breast tumors, benign and cancerous. It provides an X-ray image of the breasts, called a mammogram. It allows the radiologist to find the changes in the breast tissues even before a lump appears. During mammography, the breast is compressed between two plates, and X-rays are taken from different angles to get a clear view of the tissues and their compositions.
It can be done for screening and to confirm the diagnosis as well. The screening is done to look for signs of breast cancer in women who do not yet have any symptoms. The diagnostic mammogram is performed when the screening results reflect unusual masses, calcifications, asymmetries, and/or distortions in the breast tissues.
Ultrasound
A breast ultrasound is typically not used as a routine screening test, but it can be helpful to detect breast changes, including lumps that can be felt but not seen on a mammogram. It is also helpful for women with dense breast tissues.
The ultrasound test involves using sound waves to create computerized images of the breast. It allows the doctor to differentiate between a fluid-filled mass and a solid mass so that doctors can determine if further testing is needed to get a confirmed diagnosis.
Breast MRI
A breast MRI is an important part of screening for women who have a high risk of breast cancer. It is usually recommended with a mammogram to ensure that a tumor is detected accurately.
It is often recommended when the ultrasound or mammogram reveals a solid mass or other symptoms of breast cancer are also present. With breast MRI, the extent of the tumor, i.e., size and location can be identified.
It should be noted that not every woman who is diagnosed with breast cancer will need an MRI.
